The most clear and present danger to our democracy is the “revolving door” phenomenon, the dastardly mechanism by which our congressional representatives are able to narrowly and selfishly treat their privileged and powerful position as a mere stepping stone to an immensely profitable future as lobbyists. There is no doubt in my mind that the “revolving door” even supersedes terrorism as twenty-first America’s most serious threat to national security. Because as long as this malevolent political practice continues to fester, as long as it continues to dominate the way politicians go about crafting legislation that ultimately affects US, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, then America will continue its present trend away from democracy and towards oligarchy. No American would ever stand for that. Do you want meaningful change now or violent riots ten or twenty or thirty years in the future? As Abraham Lincoln famously stated in his Gettysburg Address, our government is of the people, by the people, for the people….and not the other way around. However, we risk Lincoln’s words becoming a eulogy to our precious system of government, lest we act now to secure our nation’s future for ourselves and coming generations.
To let your congressman know who they’re supposed to working for act now and go to www.rootstrikers.org and petition your candidate to sign The No Lobbying Pledge. The instructions are quite simple. You can find your candidate local candidate and their twitter handles here. Then print the flier and write in your candidate’s name, and take a picture as I have done here. Then sign the petition and upload your picture along with your candidate’s twitter handle. Rootstrikers will take care of the rest.
If we the people really desire change, then it’s only gonna take place grassroots style. Rootstrikers is the way to go.
The leader and founder of rootstrikers.org is Lawrence Lessig. He is the Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School and director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University.
I recently got done reading his latest book, Republic Lost: How Money Corrupts Congress and a Plan to Stop It. Without being overly technical, Lessig really gets down to the nitty gritty of the “revolving door” phenomenon as well as campaign finance. If I remember correctly, the last chapter in which he espouses on “A plan to stop it”, mentions Rootstrikers and its mission. Unlike others, Lessig will not leave you in a state of hopelessness and paralysis in the face of our country’s institutional corruption. This book not only informs but inspires. It offers very concrete steps to how WE THE PEOPLE can get organized to end the corruption in Washington.
